Circular Economy in the Manufacturing Industry

The manufacturing sector is fundamental to the global economy, and it would be difficult to imagine a world without it. However, the current system for producing and distributing manufacturing products and services is based on a linear model that is not sustainable in the long term. The use of materials and energy should be reduced, and the end products should be recovered when their lifespan comes to an end.

In 2021, Skills for the Future programme is extending its activities to Portugal, where students will be involved in an immersive entrepreneurship training to innovate the manufacturing sector through the lens of the circular economy.

Portugal Idea Camp

Skills for the Future Idea Camp will be organised in Portugal as an online event from 18 to 22 October 2021, gathering around 100 secondary school students from all over Portugal for an immersive innovation training. Students will propose solutions to the following industrial challenges of the circular economy in the manufacturing sector:

  1. How to reduce the waste generated in manufacturing processes?
  2. What by-products or waste generated in one manufacturing company could be used in another industry?
  3. How to convince society to use more recycled materials and products?

Guided by mentors with industy expertise, students will work in teams to develop innovative business ideas and improve their entrepreneurial skills. Below is an overview of how the activities will be divided:

The three challenges will be presented to students, who will decide upon one of them, and work in teams to propose innovative solutions.

Mentoring sessions will be organised for students where they will receive feedback on how to further elaborate their ideas.

Students will submit their final business canvas model.

The teams will present their ideas to the jury and consequently the winners will be announced.
